One of the best things about attending the Perth Poetry Festival was meeting so many wonderful new people. The audiences were warm and encouraging, my fellow performers were welcoming and friendly and the volunteers and WA Poets Inc folks were supportive and helpful. My whole trip to Perth was so nourishing and inspiring because of all of these beautiful people.

I love talking to new people and hearing their stories, views and opinions. It was wonderful to finally meet instagram buddies Scott Patrick Mitchell and Lisa Collier in person. And to meet Gary di Pazzio and Shey Marque from WA Poets who worked so hard with the rest of the crew to make the impossible possible. To see Laksnhmi R Kanchi again and visit the beautiful wetlands where she was a poet in residence. To talk art with Yael, see Gillian's friendly face in the audience, go for walks with Jaya Penelope and sit in the audience with Elio from the Perth Poetry Club.

I learnt about belligerent bunting from Davina (did you know it's illegal to put up bunting in Perth?). Thanks to Coral, Neil and the crew for a slightly surreal afternoon tea/drinks. Meeting and chatting to Sunil, Moly, Jake and Elizabeth, kindred spirits who know what it is like to come from someplace else. And to all the photographers who snapped so many great photos – I spent most of my time at the festival off my phone so I am super grateful for your photos!

I am so grateful to all of these beautiful people and all the others with whom I shared a conversation or a smile. You made my visit to Perth special and memorable. You turned your city into a welcoming community and made me feel as if I belonged. I'm going to treasure my visit always. People really do make a place and you brought your place to life for me, so thank you a million times and more.

I had such a fabulous time that I didn't want to leave. I will definitely be coming back as soon as I can!

  • Poetry d’Amour

    IP - Poetry d'Amour

WA poets Inc do so much to promote and support poetry both in Western Australia and Australia through their poetry competitions, the Ros Spencer Poetry Prize and Poetry d'Amour, and their accompanying anthologies. Back in 2019, I entered the Ros Spencer Poetry Prize and they publish my entry, Recipe for a Poem in the Brushstrokes anthology. It was a huge boost for a poet who was just beginning to flex her writing muscles again.

I am so pleased that after entering this year's Poetry d'Amour competition, two of my poems – Liquefy and The Ocean of You –  have been published in the 2023 Poetry d'Amour anthology. It's a huge honour! Thanks to WA Poets for publishing my poems and to the judges of the prize for reading my work.

  • Liminal Spaces, Beyond the Page Workshop

IP - Liminal Spaces Beyond the Page Workshop

Has the muse left you and inspiration fled? Do you find it hard to put into words your feelings, thoughts and emotions? Are you stuck in a rut with your writing — revisiting the same metaphors and line breaks again and again? How can you see the world with new eyes so that your writing becomes fresh and imaginative once more? Don’t worry, help is at hand with this two hour workshop that aims to get you out of your rut and thinking in new and different ways.

The key to writing differently is to learn to think and do things differently. Which isn’t as easy as it sounds as anyone who’s tried to break a habit will know. But it is possible and in this workshop you’ll get out of your head and creep into the cracks by exploring the spaces in between. Bring your child-like self, a sense of adventure and a willingness to play. Through movement, sound and drawing you’ll discover how to write poems that move beyond the page.

Bring along any art supplies that feel inspiring (coloured pencils, textas, watercolour paints etc) as well as journals, sheets of blank paper etc. It’s an excuse to go wild in the stationery section. If you want to stick with pen and paper that’s fine too but no screens please.

There will be time during the workshop to share your work with the rest of the group. Sharing is optional and positive feedback is encouraged. This workshop is suitable for poets at any level from emerging to established. Please come at least 5 minutes early so we can start on time.

Liminal Spaces – Beyond is Page, is part of an incredible line-up of events at this year's Perth Poetry Festival where I'll be appearing as a National Guest Poet alongside Juan Garrido-Slagado from South Australia and Jean Kent from New South Wales as well as International Guest Poet Srijato Bandyopadhyay from India and Local Guest Poets Lisa Collyer, Caitlin Maling, Talya Ruben and Luoyang Chen.

  • Perth Poetry Festival 2023

    Author Photo - Indrani Perera

I am honoured to announce that I will be a National Guest Poet at this year's Perth Poetry Festival alongside Juan Garrido-Slagado from South Australia and Jean Kent from New South Wales. We'll be joining International Guest Poet Srijato Bandyopadhyay from India as well as Local Guest Poets Lisa Collyer, Caitlin Maling, Talya Ruben and Luoyang Chen. The festival will take place from 9-17 September 2023 on Whadjuk Noongar land in and around the glorious Western Australian city of Boorlo / Perth.

I've been enviously observing the vibrant Perth Poetry scene from afar for quite some time and I am looking forward to discovering new poets, hearing amazing poetry and being part of it all, even if it's only for a short time. There are so many great poets coming out of Western Australia including Shastra Deo, Madison Godfrey, Scott Patrick Mitchell (who I got to interview in season one of Pocketry Presents), Rashida Murphy, Nadia Rhook and Elfie Shiosaki. And so many workshops I wish I could do, especially those being held at the Wetlands Centre (where Lakshmi R Kanchi is the poet in residence) and at the Centre for Stories.

It's going to be my second visit to the city. The first was with my parents when I was in primary school and I can barely remember anything from that trip. I'm looking forward to rediscovering this west coast city.

WA Poets Inc put on a great festival and there will be performances, open mics, workshops and more!

If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can find the workshops here. There's an early bird discount if you book before 1 July 2023.

  • Brushstrokes

    Brushstrokes Cover

Earlier this year I entered the Ros Spencer Poetry contest with my poem, Recipe for a Poem. It didn't win any awards but it was selected to be published in the anthology for the competition featuring poems from 2016-2019.

It's been a long time since I've had any poetry published (twenty-two years in fact *ahem*) and I'm so happy to have a poem published after such a long break. It feels like a sign from the muse that I am on the right track and that writing poetry is worthwhile.

Of course writing for it's own sake is always worthwhile and I will keep writing no matter what. Like writing this blog which I do mainly to express my thoughts and record my adventures in living a creative life. Not because I have to but because I want to and it brings me joy to create something with words and pictures. That said, it's nice to receive some external validation every once in a while. Keeps you going, you know?

WA Poets Inc have done a fabulous job with this anthology and I am super excited to have one of my very own poems featured in its pages.
