IP Poetry Challenge Week 4 Words IP Poetry Challenge Week 4 Poem

Week 4 words from @teasense: sky, heart, wind, follow, crave.

    my sky heart opens
    the wind follows
    and I crave
    peace

Here are the words and my poem for the fourth week of the 2019 Poetry Challenge.

I've taken a little bit of a liberty with this week's words and used follows instead of follow. The words turned into a vey short poem. It's more of a verse really. Or a haiku if there were enough syllables but it's even too short to be a haiku. It wrote itself and when I wanted to make it longer, it resisted gently but firmly. 'No,' it said, 'I want to be short.'

If you want to join the 2019 Poetry Challenge, head on over to my Instagram account where I post the words for the week on Mondays in my story. Be sure to tag me and use the hashtags #2019poetrychallenge and #livepoetsclub.

If you don't want to write a poem, you can still be part of the 2019 Poetry Challenge. Send me five random words and I'll use them in a poem. Either DM me on Instagram with the words or send me an email (indrani at indraniperera dot com).

    Happy writing!

  • 2019 Poetry Challenge – Week Three

Poetry Challenge Week 3 Words Poetry Challenge Week 3 Poem

Week 3 words from @liana.quach: chocolate, queen, round, cup and spill.

the bitter chocolate melts on my tongue
    and my head aches
from the heavy crown upon my head
I tear it off and throw with a
    clang on the table
    queen no more

    taking the cup
    I turn it widdershins
    thrice
    round and round
    and round

    I sip
    the liquid burns
    I spill my dreams
    across the floor

Here are the words and my poem for the third week of the 2019 Poetry Challenge.

This week's words sparked playful images in my mind when I first read them. The poem I started writing was light but somehow in the end it surprised me and turned a little dark. Starting with definite words in mind is bringing a new twist to my poetry writing. I'm enjoying seeing what happens when I put pen to paper.

  • 2019 Poetry Challenge – Week Two

    Poetry Challenge Week 2 Words

    Poetry Challenge Week 2 Poem

Week 2 words from @firekeepers_melb: radiance, leaf, translucence, canopy and gossamer.

radiance shines from her every pore
    welcome is a gleaming smile
    and connection her sword

    a leaf hangs motionless
    upon the branch
    the transcendent translucence
    of nature's prism
    alive in golden light

    peer through the canopy
    to see veins and skeletons
    the pulsating heart and
    chlorophyll dreams

    the leaf falls
    and she catches it
    in hands bound
    by the gossamer strands
    of hope

Here are the words and my poem for the second week of the 2019 Poetry Challenge.

It was inspiring to read all the poems for the first week and see the very different ways in which the five random words were interpreted. I got some great ideas for future poems from my fellow Instagram poets.

    Instagram Story - Poetry Challenge

    Instagram Story - Poetry Challenge

Week 1 words from @treen42: sunshine, tentative, growth, behind and regret.

    sunshine streams down
    upon her upturned face
    drying silver salt trails
    on her cheeks

    she reaches out
    a tentative hand
    to touch the sky
    hoping 2019
will be a year of growth

    and she can finally
    leave behind
    regret

Here are the words and my poem for the very first week of the 2019 Poetry Challenge.

It was so exciting waiting for the words; wondering if anyone would send in anything and if I'd be able to write a poem with them. Luckily @treen42 sent me five terrific words and I was able to write a poem. Week one, you are done!

  • 2019 Poetry Challenge

    IP - Poetry Challenge Title
After the disappointment of not getting into the poetry masterclass, I've become more determined than ever to improve my writing. Poets like Pablo Naruda, Judith Rodriguez and Seamus Heaney can make words dance across the page in the most amazing way. Their words set my mind on fire. I want to be like them.

I’ve set myself the challenge of writing a poem a week for 2019. I figure the more I write, the better I will be. Practice makes perfect after all! However, it’s going to be hard to come up with inspiration each week which is why I am asking if you can help me out by sending in five words on any topic. Each week I’ll choose words at random to write in a poem and I'll share it here.

If you want to join in, you'll find the words for the week each Monday in my Instagram highlights reel. Post your poem in the comments section on my bog each week or on Instagram and tag me and we can see all the different imaginations at work.
