  • Beyond the Page – A Poetry Workshop

Humanitix 2024 Sonic Poetry Festival Workshop (2160 x 1080 px)

I’m running a poetry workshop, Beyond the Page, on Saturday 7 September in Carlton as part of the Sonic Poetry Festival 2024.

If you're feeling uninspired or stuck in a poetry rut, come along and learn how to neurohack your writing through sound, movement and drawing.

Through exercises and writing prompts, you will:
    • use movement and drawing as part of your writing practice and to access different parts of the brain.
    • write poems from different points of view, including insects and inanimate objects.
    • write using senses other than sight — especially those of sound and hearing.

Bring your child-like self, a sense of adventure and a willingness to play!

This workshop suits emerging poets wanting to learn new skills as well as more experieienced poets looking to super charge their writing.

Will you join me? Book now!

I think I must be going through a theatre phase.  This is the third production have seen in the last month and I can't remember how many I've seen this year. It's a lot!

We lived around the corner of the National Theatre in St Kilda for almost six years and never managed to step inside this gorgeous old grande dame. She's a bit run down but I think it that only adds to her charm. The foyer and sweeping staircase are fabulously over the top and ornate. I felt as if I should be wearing diamonds and a sweeping ball gown as I posed for a photo with my gloved hand resting lightly on the bannister.

I saw my first production of Chess in Sydney when I was in my teens. At the time I loved it so much I bought the jumper! Last time I visited my folks in Canberra, Mum was wearing it around the house. So it was well worth the I'm sure exorbitant amount we paid for it back in the day. There wasn't a lot of merch on sale at this production by CLOC and I even resisted the urge to buy a program because a) I never read them and b) we are about to move to a smaller house and I need to get rid of stuff, not buy more of it!

I have to admit I wasn't expecting much from an amateur theatre production group but I am more than happy to say that the production was excellent. I know that's a bit snobby of me but it's been a while since I've seen amateur theatre and I had forgotten just how darn good it is. The set was fabulous with huge moving parts that slid across the polished floor. Both the floor and this blocks would light up at different times. Two huge screens flanked the stage and a third was located at the back. Live footage from the production was streamed straight on the screens.  and filmed b

    The costumes were fabulous

I've been living in Melbourne for over twelve years, driven through the city countless times and seen the Eureka Tower but never been to the top. When the girls were little the phrase 'I can see Eureka tower' was a bit of a running joke with them imagining they could see it in all sorts of places like Sunshine and Nunawading.

All that changed yesterday when we took the family to Eureka tower to celebrate our oldest girl turning seventeen. Seventeen! Can you believe it? I certainly can't. It feels like a heart beat ago when she was a baby lying on the floor at the mum's group catch up in Sydney. A mere breath since she took her first steps and spoke her first words. A flicker of an eye lash since she went into a shop in Buenos Aires and ordered some bananas, in Spanish. And now look at her – smart, stunning and funny. I love talking to her and hearing about all the things she's learning. How did she get to be so wise?

IP - The Dirty Thirty Poetry Challenge

I can't believe it's been a whole year and that it's April again already and time for the Dirty Thirty!

April is poetry month and there's an Australian poetry group on Facebook that anyone can join. It's run by Abdulrahman in Sydney. He posts a prompt a day and people post their responses. You don't have to post every day if you don't want to – there's no pressure or expectations (except those you place on yourself of course!). Each day Abdulrahman picks a poem that he personally connected with as the Pick of the Day.

I did it last year and it was super helpful for my writing and generated a lot of material (and made lockdown much more bearable!). It's a great group and very supportive. I'd highly recomend it for anyone wanting to improve on their writing.
