One thing the pandemic and unpredictable lockdowns have taught me is to seize the moment! As soon as each lockdown ends, I make a plan to go somewhere and do something fun.

Every year I take my girls to see the Christmas windows in the city, visit a bookshop and get some yummy chocolates from Haighs. It's nice to do the same things each year and have all those past layers adding to each new experience. Even though Christmas is still ages away, I decided now was the perfect time to go and visit the windows. After all, who knows what we'll be able to do in a month's time?

We usually wait until a week or two before Christmas to go and end up spending at least an hour lining up to see the windows. The bonus of going so far before Christmas was that there was no queue at all and we could walk straight up to the windows. The barricades were already set up in anticipation of the crowds who throng to see the magical scenes from stories brought to life by the very clever people who create the displays and we just whizzed along, straight up to Peter Rabbit!

We made a day of it, visiting as many of our favourite city haunts as we could because who knows when we'll be able to make it back here again?

The pandemic has taught me to take nothing for granted and to try and live each moment to its fullest.

One of my favourite things about the festive season is all the baking of yummy treats. This year we're not going to Canberra to spend Christmas with my parents and my youngest daughter is very sad about not seeing her Nana and Seeya. She's been missing them dreadfully. She's determined to make Christmas at home as much as fun as it is with them. We've been decorating our place and she wanted to make a gingerbread house like the one Nana makes. A whole house felt a little beyond my abilities (and hello, witch?) so we compromised on these little guys.

I was feeling pretty tired the day we made these but Miss P insisted we all sit down together after dinner and ice them. She didn't want to be sensible (and let's face it, boring) and wait until the next day. Oh no, she was excited and full of joy and wanted to do it now! So we did.

And I am glad she insisted because it was so much fun to sit around our kitchen table, decorating gingerbread shapes. It's funny, I've been missing all the spontaneity and excitement that very small children bring and then when one of mine does, I get all resistant! Note to self- remember to follow the joy!

What holidays do you celebrate and what are your family traditions?

Every year my daughters make Christmas presents to give to friends and family members. This year we were a bit stuck with what to make. After all, there's only so many tea towels, aprons and bags someone can use. Ditto with bookmarks and art work. We were stumped until Miss 13 came up with the idea of baking something for the grandparents. Genius! Who needs more stuff when you can have scrumptious, homemade baked goodies?

Once we tasted our friend's amazing shortbread, we knew that was what we wanted to make. As promised, the recipe was super simple with lots of fun of rolling out dough and cutting shapes. The house smelt amazing and although I can't eat the shortbread I can admire it from afar.

I hope you've had a wonderful festive season, whatever you celebrate.

I'm not sure how much longer I can keep doing our annual Christmas windows celebration. Every year since my first daughter was born, I've taken my girls into the city to see the holiday windows created by a major Australian department store. The store spends about nine months creating a wonderland for children and adults alike. It's a magical and beautiful way to tell a story and who doesn't love a good story?

I still love seeing the windows and revelling in the magic, however, Miss 13 isn't so sure anymore. She's getting too old for childish things. Luckily I convinced her to come along this year and we got to see the windows. I'm so glad because this year's theme was based  on the beautiful gumnut babies characters created by Australian author and artist May Gibbs. When May Gibbs died in 1969 she left her estate to UNICEF and the copyright in her works to charity.

It's lovely to see an Australian summer theme reflecting our bush landscape. Although I was glad they decided not to include the Banksia men. Lots of kids over the years have had nightmares about them!

We make a day of it. Pack our lunches and take the train to the city. Visit Haighs to buy chocolate and celebrate the end of another year of learning. Go to our favourite bookshop and check out the latest titles. I always say I won't buy them a book and I always do. How can you resist the promise of a new story?

Every year I take my girls into the city to see the Christmas windows. I remember my mum taking me to the city to see them when I was small. I'm not sure if she took me every year but it's a golden jewel shining bright in my memory. I love the idea of my girls being the second generation of our family to celebrate this tradition. It gives me goosebumps!

This year we went nice and early to get it out of the way before our big move out to the hills. For the first time we could go straight to the front and walk right in to see the windows – there was no queue or waiting for up to an hour! I think this year's Alice In Wonderland windows are my favourite of recent years. They were so wonderful I'm hoping we can manage to go back before Christmas.

Afterwards we went to Haigh's where the girls pored over the truffle display before choosing their chocolates. It's always such a terribly difficult and vitally important decision. Which flavour shall I choose this time? Something new or something I know I like? Hard call!

We ended our day with a visit to Dymocks to check out the latest books. It's wonderful now they can both read – I actually get to browse the books!

What are your special Christmas traditions?

    Happy winter solstice beautiful people!

Last week I took my dye pots and bits of rusty metal along to the Darebin Parklands. My girls and I taught some friends how to eco dye. We then boiled our solstice paper bundles outdoors with water from the creek over an open fire.  Today we will be back at the creek opening our bundles. Can't wait!

Tonight will be our family solstice celebrations with pumpkin soup, hot chocolate, rice pudding and a candle lantern walk around our city block of flats. It's our annual tradition and looked forward to in our house by everyone.

I hope you have a beautiful day (and night!) celebrating the longest night of the year with warmth, light , laughter, song and loved ones.

I love this time of year. The weather is getting warmer, there's lots of fun things to do and Christmas gifts to make. All the cafes and restaurants that were empty over winter are overflowing till late in the evening as everyone takes advantage of the long, balmy nights. There's most definitely a festive feeling in the air.

As well as getting out and about, I've been spending time in the kitchen whipping up Christmas treats to share with our teachers, family and friends. It's so lovely to give the gift of thoughtful, handmade presents that can be eaten and the jars then reused. No useless plastic crap that ends up in landfill around here!

Our honey macadamias are a firm holiday favourite with one neighbour hiding them from her husband so that she can eat the whole jar! This year we've also added homemade dukkah and tamari seeds to our goodies to give away. We made the dukkah largely by hand and my oldest girl loved pounding the hazelnuts in the mortar and pestle. She was really into doing it all my hand. She's my girl!

I hope you're finding some time to do some Christmas making and baking at this hectic time of year. It's so good for the soul!
